Coronavirus – Day One – Devotion
Stay Calm…Wash Your Hands
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?
Yet not one of them will fall to the ground
apart from your Father.”
Surely God cannot hear all of our prayers. Surely we imagine that God has greater concerns than our daily struggles. This passage tells us otherwise. God is keenly aware of each of us, our prayers, and our concerns.
Psalm 139 (my favorite psalm) tells us that, “Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely…In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.” And, our scripture from Matthew assures us that God knows us so intimately that, “even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid, you are of more value than many sparrows.”
God’s concern for you and for all of creation did not stop when God took a rest on the seventh day of creation. Through his life, teaching, death, and resurrection Jesus communicates to us over and over again that each one of us is valued by God and our troubles, like our health during this present crisis, is foremost in God’s mind. To convince us of this Jesus points to the sparrows that have very little worth in human financial transactions but are precious to our creator God and he says, “you are of more value than many sparrows.”
We simply cannot know and care on the grand scale that God knows and cares. Our vision and understanding is merely a human one, but regardless, we are of utmost value to God. God loves us and wishes for us an abundant and healthy life here on this earth and Jesus provides us with the hope of an eternal life surrounded by the glory of God.
A Time of Meditation:
In a time of silence become mindful that God loves you so much that there is nothing about you that God does not know and that all of your present concerns are God’s concerns.
Merciful and everlasting God, I thank you for your unfailing love and concern for me and all of my Chapel family, neighbors, and friends. I give to you my deepest concerns and my greatest hopes, knowing that you will take them and form them into the incredible beauty of your kingdom on this earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
