Scripture
Matthew 25:14-30

“‘Well done indeed,’ said his master.
‘You’re an excellent slave, and loyal too!
You’ve been trustworthy with small things,
and now I’m going to
put you in charge of bigger ones.
Come and join your master’s celebration.'”

Jesus’ first hearers would have understood this story in terms of God and Israel. God was the master, Israel the servant, and God had left Israel certain responsibilities. God had called Israel to be the means of carrying forward God’s great project to rescue and renew all of creation. God had gifted Israel with the means to do this and sooner or later God would return to see what God’s people had done with these gifts.

Now, throughout the centuries the church has read this scripture differently. Scholars have suggested that this story is about Jesus’ call on his followers and his gifts to each of us to be used in service to God. Read this way the emphasis is on the possibility that each of us has been given the gift of a particular purpose and calling that only we can do. Our job is to get involved in the struggle to discover what our calling might be.

Sometimes discerning our particular and unique gift (or gifts) is difficult but all of us are free to live as a wise and loving human being, celebrating God’s love, forgiving, praying, seeking justice, acting courageously, and waiting patiently for God’s will to be done. If we are trustworthy with these simple gifts of God, we too might hear, “Well done, good and trustworthy servant.”

To hear those words from a family member or boss might bring a glow of satisfaction. To hear them from the Lord of love will be greater than the greatest delight we can imagine.

Meditation

In this time of silence and meditation I ask you to consider your unique and God-given skills and talents. How might you use them to further God’s redemptive mission here on earth? One opportunity that you have is through the ministries of this Chapel. Might you prayerfully use your Time and Talent Sheet to help you discern your calling…your passion for service?

Closing Prayer

Lord of all gifts, help us to use to your glory the things you have entrusted to us. Amen.

As you complete your time of meditation and prayer Tamara invites you to reflect on the words of this song…

May the grace and peace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ,
be with you now and forevermore…
Pastor Paul
